Envision a society where, despite your size, shape, or mobility, every garment fits you like a glove. That is both the beauty and the difficulty of adaptive apparel. Previously reserved for the well-off, the fashion industry is today welcoming of all shapes and sizes. Adaptive apparel has its own language thanks to thoughtfully designed pieces – go here!
One example is my neighbor Jane, who is wheelchair-bound. Buying clothes used to be a real pain because of all the zippers, buttons, and droopy hems. But adaptable clothing? Imagine a lovely and incredibly welcoming sea wind. That’s how it feels. Consider using Velcro or magnetic buttons in place of cumbersome clasps. Why bother dealing with a stubborn zipper?
When asked, “Why the fuss?” Imagine Sam, an exuberant autistic eight-year-old. Tagless shirts that reduce sensory overload are revolutionary in his view. Envision him cheerfully making his way to school, clothes free of any annoyance.
And then there’s Ahmed, who takes arthritis very seriously. His daily routine is completely changed by adaptive gear. Ahmed is able to regain his freedom thanks to buttons that cooperate and pull-on jeans that don’t fight. Seems magical, but it’s really just a matter of clever reasoning!
Diversity is king, even within style. Vibrant designs for some, more subdued color schemes for others. An orchestra of options that cater to various preferences and requirements. Dignity and choice are at stake, not merely practicality.
As the saying goes, “it’s better late than never” when it comes to fashion brands adjusting their lenses. They have seen a new market and are now catering to it. What about the consumers? They demand more than what regular racks can provide with their louder, crisper voices.
How amazing it is that clothing is created with people in mind! It’s about time fashion became real and quit trying to please everyone. Since we all come out on top when style is inclusive, here’s to a movement that encourages everyone to get down and dance.
